Winter Birdwatching Highlights Near Saltcote
With every shift in the winter weather, the spectacle at Rye Harbour Nature Reserve transforms, offering fresh discoveries with each visit. Even after a mild spell, you’ll find resilient blooms like Red Valerian and Yellow-horned Poppy, with butterflies such as Small Tortoiseshell and Peacock occasionally flitting by—proof that nature here is never dormant.

Duck enthusiasts are in for a treat as populations swell this season, including colourful drakes of Wigeon, Shoveler, Gadwall, Teal, and perhaps the elegant Pintail. Rye Harbour is renowned for making waterfowl identification rewarding and accessible, especially for those keen to examine plumage at its finest.

Along the Beach Reserve, watch for converging flocks of Greenfinches, Goldfinches, and Linnets, and keep your binoculars ready for harder-to-spot Lapland or Snow Buntings. On clear days, the skies come alive with hundreds—or even thousands—of Lapwing and Golden Plovers. These gatherings attract top avian predators; Merlin, Marsh Harrier, Peregrine, and Short-eared Owl all make dramatic appearances, alongside regulars like Kestrel and Sparrowhawk. We very often have the Sparrowhawks at Saltcote Place and used to have our own peacocks, and a barn own who was a much loved pet.

For those who love reedbeds and wetlands, Castle Water invites you to spot wintering Stonechat and Chiffchaff, with the haunting calls of Water Rail, elusive Cetti’s Warbler, and striking Bearded Tits adding an auditory thrill. The waterside margins offer both the familiar grace of Little Egret and the rare treat of Bittern or even a Great White Egret.

Offshore, look for Red-throated Diver and Great Crested Grebe, and after a storm, marvel at flocks of Gannet and Guillemot diving for fish. Scan for the striking lines of Common Scoter, sometimes accompanied by the less common Velvet Scoter gliding over the waves.

Even beachcombing appeals to the naturalist here—winter waves wash ashore odd treasures, from cuttlefish bones to mermaids’ purses. Along these same shorelines, Turnstone and other foragers uncover a feast among the tidal debris.
