08 Feb Rye Town Centre
Rye Town Centre is a beautiful place to visit, plenty of independent small retailers but it’s the character of this charming medieval town that will captivate and hold you spellbound.
The Citadel reveals at each turn the rich history with Jacobean, Tudor and all periods up to the modern day blended with care by custodians throughout the ages.
Approaching Rye High street from Hilders cliff you will pass under the Landgate. The Norman Conquest started on the 28th of September 1066 with the invasion of England by William, the Duke of Normandy it led to the French occupying the Town of Rye until 1247 when on the orders of Henry III it was reclaimed. The Landgate is the only remaining gate from the period in Rye.
Temptation awaits you with tea rooms set nicely in Jacobean properties, thankfully none of the brands here that litter our cities. Rye Town Centre extends from Hilders Cliff down through The Mint onto the strand but that’s not all.
Pop up East street and visit the first of two locations for Rye Museum, visit Church square and return to St Mary’s church which is well worth climbing if open to look down over Rye. Meander down Lion street or cross behind St Mary’s Church to Mermaid Street.
Probably one of the most photographed and most picturesque streets in England.
Rye Town Centre has far too many AirBnB properties which blight the area, visiting Guests have fed the seagulls from many of the windows which means at 5am a tap on the window from a seagull can almost be guaranteed, far more likely than a restful nights sleep.
